The Brief

The annual fishing event is run by an existing customer of ours a 'JBD Sports and Event Management' and run on behalf of the PDC (Professional Darts Corporation). Whilst in the past three years the event has been promoted on their own website, it was felt that the 2016 event had become big enough to justify its own site.

As well as promoting the 2016 competition, there was also a requirement to acknowledge the history built up over the previous three years the event has been running.

As a limited number of tickets are sold to the general public to attend the event and watch the celebrities fishing, there was a necessity to provide information relating to the date, time and venue of the event, as well as how to apply for tickets.

In order to encourage the general public to attend the website needed to provide information about the various personalities and celebrities taking part, as well as the charity it supports.

As with most charity events there is a reliance on the kindness of sponsors, and so another important factor relating to the design, was to ensure sponsors received the necessary recognition on the website.

As one of the sponsors provides personalised clothing for all the competitors, there was an additional request to develop a simple to use system which would sit behind a unique login, where each competitor can make their choices from a complete range of clothing.

How We Responded

Having attended all of the previous three annual events in the role of official website photographer, and as a keen angler himself, our director Richard was able to draw on his experience and knowledge of fishing to help brief the team, ensuring the design met both the needs of the customer whilst appealing to the target market.

In the 2015 competition we carried out some filming using our drone and some of the footage was used in the hour-long Sky Sports coverage of the event. As we had been provided with this film, we decided to make it a feature of the home page design using a short snippet which summarises the friendly but competitive atmosphere of the event.

We created a page providing key information about each of the competitors in the event, which as well as some general information about each of the celebrities, as many taken part in the event previously, also provided some statistical data showing their results from previous years.

Further pages were developed to provide more detailed information about the event, the charity and the sponsors. An area for photo and video galleries showing images and footage from previous years was also created, ticking the box which required there to be information about the previous events.

Finally, we created a 'competitors' login area which via a uniquely created password, anglers fishing event are able to choose their clothing for the day from a wide range of hats, T-shirts, polo shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, jogging bottoms and shorts. As this area is private you are unable to view it on the website, however to give an indication of how the system works we have put together an image to illustrate it.

 


I feel very confident when I say that the website certainly exceeded the expectations of the customer, as he has already contacted us a number of times to express how delighted he is with the website, which is lucky for us, as he is an ex-heavyweight boxer.
