PHP Developer | Hertfordshire

We are currently seeking a talented junior/mid-level PHP developer to join our team and are looking for either a graduate or junior developer (1-2 years experience), ideally with commercial experience of PHP programming and HTML, to design and build innovative websites and systems.

Advanced Web Designs Ltd is an established multi-award winning web design company based in Hertford, Hertfordshire, specialising in the bespoke design and development of websites and online systems.

Working in a small but bustling team, this is a fantastic opportunity to jump straight into the deep end and get involved in delivering cutting-edge websites and systems; broaden your knowledge; hone your technical abilities; and make pivotal contributions to local, national and international online businesses.

The successful candidate:

  • Demonstrable development experience using PHP, SQL databases, JavaScript, CSS and HTML; commercial or through education.
  • Ability to write clean and well-structured, semantic code.
  • Understanding of basic relational database concepts.
  • Enthusiastic and passionate about web programming and prepared and able to self-learn.
  • A good sense for optimisation in both code and load efficiency.
  • Demonstrate good face-to-face, telephone and written communication skills.

How we work:

  • Our work is bespoke and we don’t use frameworks for our PHP code.
  • We have built our own responsive CSS framework.
  • We have developed our own bespoke CMS platform which is used for all projects, therefore we do not use packages such as Wordpress or Magento.
  • We are a small team, with a number of crossover roles. A prospective candidate will be adaptable and will occasionally need to help relieve pressure from others in the office working in similar roles (i.e. front-end development, customer liaison, etc)

Key responsibilities:

  • Develop a full backend to existing front end builds.
  • Develop a full website front end from both graphic concepts and partial front end builds.
  • Liaising with clients from initial project briefs and during the development process.
  • Updating code or carrying out bug fixes to our existing website portfolio.
  • Desired but not essential:
  • An understanding of OOP (object orientated programming) and using classes, and the benefits of them both.
  • Experience of CSS preprocessors (SASS/LESS, or equivalent).
  • Experience of integration with third party API’s.
  • Knowledge of Node/npm and Gulp compilers (or equivalent, e.g. Grunt).
  • Experience with Git version control.
  • Experience of cPanel-based hosting.
  • Knowledge of Linux/using terminal commands (such as accessing a server via SSH).
  • Basic knowledge of Photoshop (for exporting images, etc).
  • Working with SVG images.
  • A basic understanding of SEO and important base considerations that can affect a website, such as avoiding duplicate content, meta information, etc.
  • Understanding the importance of speed optimisation, utilising tools such as Google’s PageSpeed Insights and Pingdom tools.
  • An understanding of WebGL.

Salary:

  • £24,000 - £30,000 per year depending on experience (with annual reviews)
  • Permanent, full time – 40 hours per week
  • Matched pension contributions
